GEORGETOWN – Michael Chong, Member of Parliament for Wellington-Halton Hills, today announced funding of $608,000 for significant repairs to the Col. J.R. Barber Armoury, located in Georgetown, Ontario. The Col. J.R. Barber Armoury is home of the Halton Company of the Lorne Scots Infrantry Regiment.

“Ensuring that Canada’s military installations are in a state of good repair is important,” Chong said. “The funding announced today will allow the Lorne Scots to continue to operate at the highest levels of operational readiness and excellence that the Canadian Armed Forces are known for, both at home and abroad.”

Members of the Lorne Scots have distinguished themselves in war and in peace, defending Canada and its values. Mobilized early during the Second World War, platoons of Lornes took part in significant battles, where they fought in the Raid on Dieppe and the capture of Boulogne-Sur-Mer with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada. Since then, the Lorne Scots have made valuable contributions to peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, Cambodia, Croatia and Bosnia. More recently, nearly twenty-five per cent of the unit was deployed to Afghanistan.

“As Canadians, we owe a great deal to the men and women in uniform that fought bravely to keep Canada strong and free,” said Chong. “Over the years, the Halton Company of the Lorne Scots Infantry Regiment has played an important role in defending Canada’s values of democracy, liberty and the rule of law.”

The $608,000 will be used to replace the roof of the main building and provide upgrades to the lighting and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. This money is a part of the federal government’s $452 million infrastructure fund to repair and upgrade military facilities across Canada. The money will also create local jobs and economic growth in the communities where these facilities are located.
