On Wednesday September 16, at the request of the Chinese Ambassador, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Chong held a phone call with H.E. Cong Peiwu, Ambassador of China, about current Canada-China relations.
Chong highlighted several issues with the Ambassador, including:
- The detention of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor: MP Chong strongly stated Conservative concerns about the ongoing and wrongful detention of Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor.
- The National Security Law in Hong Kong: MP Chong indicated Canada’s direct interest in Hong Kong, emphasizing the 300,000 Canadians living there and the role Canadian soldiers played in defending Hong Kong during the Second World War. He raised concerns about the unilateral imposition of national security legislation in violation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration.
- Canadians’ Attitudes Toward China: MP Chong communicated the views of Canadians by indicating that public attitudes are hardening toward the Chinese government, both here and in other democracies.
H.E. Cong Peiwu acknowledged the feedback and reiterated China’s position on these matters.
