Face au toll\u00e9 public, Highland Companies retire<\/em><\/strong>ses plans d\u2019exploitation de la carri\u00e8re de Melancthon<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

OTTAWA \u2013 Michael Chong, d\u00e9put\u00e9 de Wellington-Halton Hills, se r\u00e9jouit que la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Highland Companies ait renonc\u00e9 \u00e0 son projet de m\u00e9gacarri\u00e8re dans le canton de Melancthon. Couvrant pr\u00e8s de 2\u00a0500\u00a0acres, mesurant 3 milles de large et 200 pieds de profond et pompant 600 millions de litres d\u2019eau par jour, la m\u00e9gacarri\u00e8re aurait compt\u00e9 parmi les plus grosses mines \u00e0 ciel ouvert d\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Nord.<\/p>\n

La m\u00e9gacarri\u00e8re aurait d\u00e9truit des terres agricoles de grande qualit\u00e9 et l\u2019habitat naturel de la flore et de la faune. Elle aurait affect\u00e9 les bassins hydrographiques des rivi\u00e8res Nottawasaga et Grand ainsi que les eaux souterraines dont se servent un million de Canadiens en aval de ces bassins.<\/p>\n

Chong remercie la North Dufferin Agricultural and Community Task Force et tous les militants qui ont travaill\u00e9 sans rel\u00e2che contre ce projet. \u00ab\u00a0C\u2019est gr\u00e2ce au soutien ind\u00e9fectible des r\u00e9sidents, a-t-il dit, que nous sommes parvenus \u00e0 emp\u00eacher l\u2019am\u00e9nagement de cette carri\u00e8re.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s avoir eu vent du projet en 2011, Chong s\u2019est employ\u00e9 au niveau f\u00e9d\u00e9ral \u00e0 en contrecarrer la r\u00e9alisation avec son coll\u00e8ge David Tilson, d\u00e9put\u00e9 de Dufferin-Caledon. \u00ab\u00a0\u00c0 cause des pr\u00e9occupations de mes commettants au sujet de cette m\u00e9gacarri\u00e8re, j\u2019ai exprim\u00e9 mon opposition au projet \u00e0 la Chambre des communes le 15 juin 2011. Moins d\u2019un an et demi plus tard, la demande d\u2019exploitation de la m\u00e9gacarri\u00e8re est retir\u00e9e. Voil\u00e0 qui montre que la d\u00e9mocratie fonctionne bel et bien\u00a0\u00bb, d\u00e9clare Chong.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Les bonnes terres agricoles de l\u2019Ontario doivent \u00eatre pr\u00e9serv\u00e9es pour les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations futures. Je suis content de voir que Highland Companies a tenu compte des inqui\u00e9tudes de milliers de Canadiens des comt\u00e9s de Dufferin et de Wellington et de tout le sud-ouest de l\u2019Ontario\u00a0\u00bb, conclut Chong.<\/p>\n
