style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">OTTAWA &#8211; Michael Chong, Member of Parliament for Wellington-Halton Hills, made a statement in the House of Commons on Monday.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u00ab\u00a0Dozens of new cases of measles have been reported in North America,\u00a0\u00bb Chong said afterwards. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u00ab\u00a0These outbreaks are a direct result of parents not wanting to vaccinate their children. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u00ab\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily and can lead to high fever and rashes. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In some cases, it can lead to serious complications, including death. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Other complications may include pneumonia and encephalitis, which can cause brain damage. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Measles can also cause deafness.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">A 2013 United Nations found postponement That Canada&rsquo;s vaccination rates dropped in recent decades, to 84%, well below the 95% needed for herd immunity, ranking 28 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">are<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> of 29 Industrialized countries. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">This decline in immunization puts children and vulnerable people at risk.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Older Canadians can remember the deaths caused by polio, diphtheria, whooping cough and measles.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Much of the misinformation about vaccinations comes from Andrew Wakefield published in \u00ab\u00a0The Lancet\u00a0\u00bb in 1998, which incorrectly linked immunizations for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) with autism. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">This report is based on falsified information. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Mr. Wakefield was stripped of his medical license and \u00ab\u00a0The Lancet\u00a0\u00bb published a complete retraction.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u00ab\u00a0The vaccines are safe and effective,\u00a0\u00bb said Chong. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u00ab\u00a0I encourage all parents to consult their family doctor to ensure their children&rsquo;s immunizations are up to date. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u00ab\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span
