FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – Today, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Chong held a phone call with Representative Winston Wen-yi Chen of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada about Canada-Taiwan relations.

Chong highlighted several items, including:

  • Canadians’ appreciation of Taiwan’s generous donation of masks during the pandemic. MP Chong congratulated Taiwan on its effective handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, and indicated the world has a lot to learn from how Taiwan responded. He cited Taiwan’s effective response as one of the reasons why Conservatives support Taiwan’s inclusion in the World Health Organization (WHO). He also reiterated that Conservatives support Taiwan’s inclusion in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
  • Conservatives belief that Canada needs to broaden and deepen ties with liberal democracies that have similarly sized market-based economies, such as Taiwan. MP Chong also indicated that Conservatives believe that Canada should work to join the “Quad” group of Australia, India, Japan and the United States.

Representative Winston Wen-yi Chen congratulated MP Chong on his appointment and thanked him for Conservative support for Taiwan’s inclusion in the WHO and ICAO. He also indicated Taiwan’s desire to broaden and deepen trade and other bilateral ties with Canada, based on our common values of democracy and human rights.
