Ottawa, ON – On Monday, November 30, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Chong held a phone call with H.E. Nasise Challi Jira, Ambassador of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, about Canada-Ethiopia relations.
MP Chong highlighted several items with the Ambassador, including:
- The diplomatic relations Canada and Ethiopia have had since 1965.
- The $200 million in foreign aid that Canada provides to Ethiopia annually, making Ethiopia one of the largest recipients of Canada’s foreign aid.
- Conservatives’ concerns about current conflict in Ethiopia, including reports of ongoing violence and allegations of atrocities. MP Chong urged all parties to protect civilians, and ensure that human rights and international law are respected. He indicated that the reports of massacres should be investigated and those responsible be brought to justice.
- Conservatives’ condemnation of the recent attacks on civilian targets in Eritrea by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
H.E. Nasise Challi Jira congratulated MP Chong on his appointment. They discussed the political situation, the upcoming election, the current conflict, and the way forward to peace and stability in Ethiopia.
