Ottawa, ON – On Monday, January 25, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Chong held a phone call with H.E. Pham Cao Phong, the Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Canada about Canada-Vietnam relations.
MP Chong highlighted several items with the Ambassador, including:
- Canada’s diplomatic relations with Vietnam since 1973 and Canada’s contribution of over $1.5 billion to Vietnam over 25 years to assist in development and reducing poverty.
- Canada’s largest trading partner in the ASEAN region is Vietnam.
- Conservatives’ belief in expanding trade and investment with Vietnam under the new Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)
- Conservatives’ belief that Canada must engage more intensely in the Indo-Pacific region.
H.E. Pham Cao Phong and MP Chong discussed the pandemic, China, ASEAN, APEC and their desire to continue the dialogue on Canada-Vietnam relations.
