Ottawa, ON – On Thursday, May 13, the Hon. Michael Chong, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a phone call with H.E. Sir Ronald Sanders, High Commissioner of Antigua and Barbuda to Canada about Canada-Antigua and Barbuda relations.

MP Chong highlighted several items with the High Commissioner, including:

  • Canada’s close relationship with Antigua and Barbuda and other countries of the Caribbean, in particular the shared parliamentary systems and historical ties through the Commonwealth;
  • Conservatives’ belief in further developing closer diplomatic, trade and investment ties with Antigua and Barbuda; and,
  • Conservatives’ belief in working with the democracies of the Caribbean on advancing democracy, human rights and the rule of law in multilateral fora.

H.E. Sir Ronald Sanders and MP Chong discussed the difficult economic situation of the countries of the Caribbean, the need to secure vaccines to re-open tourism, extreme weather events and climate change, students from Antigua and Barbuda studying at Canadian post-secondary institutions and China. They agreed to keep in touch and to continue the dialogue on Canada-Antigua and Barbuda relations.
