Ottawa, ON – On Wednesday, April 6th, the Hon. Michael Chong, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs held a meeting with Mr. Arnaud Gaspart, Deputy Head of Mission (Political Affairs) and Mr. Maxime Ramon, Counselor (Economic Affairs) of the Embassy of Belgium, about Canada-Belgium relations.
MP Chong highlighted several items with Mr. Gaspart and Mr. Ramon, including:
- Conservatives’ believe that Canada must play a bigger role to assist its liberal democratic allies, particularly with respect to fertilizer and energy, to displace fertilizer and energy from Russia.
- Conservatives’ support for the promotion of trade and investment, and closer cooperation between Canada and liberal democracies, such as Belgium.
Mr. Gaspart, Mr. Ramon, and MP Chong shared their concerns of the war between Ukraine and Russia and discussed the promotion of fertilizer and energy from Canada to Belgium, particularly of potash from Saskatchewan. They also discussed the potential for partnership between Canada-Belgium on hydrogen products, and the importance of ensuring sanctions against Russia remain effective and are not circumvented. They agreed to keep in touch and to continue the dialogue on Canada-Belgium relations.
