Ottawa, ON – On Wednesday, May 11th, the Hon. Michael Chong, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs held a meeting with H.E. Anahit Harutyunyan, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Canada, about Canada-Armenia relations.
MP Chong highlighted several items with the Ambassador, including:
- Conservatives’ belief in expanding trade with Armenia
- Conservatives’ belief that Canadian arms exports should be used appropriately and in accordance with Canadian law as well as the principles of the NATO treaty.
- Conservatives’ belief that Canada, being the fifth largest natural gas producer globally, can be a key supplier of energy to the world and has capabilities to displace Russian gas.
H.E. Anahit Harutyunyan and MP Chong shared concerns about the war between Ukraine and Russia and its implications for democracies, such as Armenia. They discussed Canada’s diplomatic presence in Armenia. The Ambassador also highlighted Armenia’s desire to broaden diplomatic relations in the region and to normalize relations with Turkey. They agreed to continue the dialogue on Canada-Armenia relations.
