Ottawa, ON – On Thursday, June 9th, 2022, the Hon. Michael Chong, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs had a meeting with H.E. Kerim Uras, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey, about Canada-Turkey relations.
MP Chong highlighted several items with the Ambassador including:
- Conservatives’ belief that democracies are being increasingly challenged by authoritarian states and the need for allies like Canada and Turkey to stand together.
- A desire to work with Turkey in the NATO alliance, upholding the alliance’s common values of individual liberty, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
The Ambassador and MP Chong discussed the war on Ukraine, Turkey’s relations with Iraq, Syria and Russia, the normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia, the Canadian technology in Baykar drones, as well as Turkish Airlines’ request for more landing slots. They also discussed Sweden’s and Finland’s accession to NATO. They agreed to continue the dialogue on Canada-Turkey relations.
